Isolation, depression and other issues are faced by seniors who live with uncorrected hearing loss.

A third of seniors have a hearing impairment, according to the National Institutes of Health.

Unfortunately, many go undiagnosed because the seniors either don’t realize they have a loss, don’t want to admit it, or don’t want — or don’t think they can afford — the corrective actions to address their loss.

For most, learning about their loss and how to address it takes just a painless visit to an Audiologist.

What better time to discuss this with our seniors than May, which is Better Hearing and Speech Month!

Our Interview with an Audiologist

Audiology and Audiologists are very important to the diagnosis and correction of hearing problems but most of us are unaware of them. We thought Better Hearing and Speech Month is a great time learn more.

The feature segment of this episode of the Senior Care Corner® Show is an interview Kathy conducted with Dr. Deborah Berndtson, an Audiologist and Associate Director in the Audiology Professional Practices at the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA).

ASHA is the national professional, scientific, and credentialing association for 186,000 members and affiliates who are audiologists; speech-language pathologists; speech, language, and hearing scientists; audiology and speech-language pathology support personnel; and students.

Through Kathy’s conversation with Deborah, we learn about the education and training that goes into being an Audiologist and how they can help our senior loved ones (and those of all ages).

Deborah explains what’s involved with getting a hearing test and tells us about self-screening we can do to help us determine when a visit to an Audiologist is needed (see the links below for more information).
